What is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown (also called a dental capsule) covers a tooth in whole or in part. A dental crown is used for aesthetic reasons or as a prosthesis, but also to cover a dental implant. After preparing the tooth or after inserting the abutment of the dental implant, the dentist takes the impression of the arch of the affected tooth and sends it to the dental laboratory, where the dental crown will be designed applying the chosen material. The crown is then cemented to the prepared tooth, or in the case of a dental implant, it can be either cemented or screwed to the implant using the abutment.
Dental Crown: How to Put it On?
To place a dental crown, you will need to make at least two appointments in our dental clinic. Here are all the steps that the dentist takes in case you need to cover a damaged tooth :
- Devitalizes the tooth, where necessary;
- “Peels ” the surface of the tooth to allow the technician to have the space to build the new tooth;
- Takes the impression of the tooth;
- Place a temporary crown on the tooth;
- Send the impression to the laboratory that will build the final crown;
- Once the final crown has arrived, the dentist glues it on your tooth after having tried it on and making sure that it meets all the needs of the case.
Dental Crowns Materials in Turkey
As Dental Crowns in Turkey, we use a variety of materials to create a dental crown, such as metal, ceramic, zirconia and composite resin.
Let’s see the characteristics of the most used ones:
Metal-composite dental crown
Crowns of this type are made of metal on the inside and composite resin on the outside, a material also used for fillings.
The disadvantage of the composite is that over the years, it wears out and yellows easily.
The advantage is that it is very cheap, but it is now less and less used because the aesthetic result is unsatisfactory when compared with other materials.
Metal-ceramic dental crown
These are capsules made up of two layers of materials: inside is metal – solid and resistant – while outside is ceramic.
They are good quality dental prostheses, but they have a disadvantage: they are very dark inside. This causes:
- if the gum shrinks, you will see a black border between the gum and the crown.
- the general aesthetic result is unfavorable, being made of metal;
- they could (in theory) create sensitization for those allergic to the metal alloy they are made of.
A dental crown in zirconium-ceramic or all-ceramic
Crowns made from these materials have a virtually identical appearance to natural teeth, and this makes them excellent from an aesthetic point of view.
Zirconium is a very light and resistant material and therefore ensures a long life for the dental capsule.
The light cannot pass through the zirconium, and therefore they are suitable for covering very dark teeth. Conversely, all-ceramic capsules are not suitable for this purpose, as they are very translucent.
For all these reasons, it can be said that zirconium-ceramic and all-ceramic are the best materials for making dental crowns.
Crown on Dental Implants
Dental crowns are also used in implant surgery, i.e. when a missing tooth is replaced with an artificial one.
In these cases, our dentist in Turkey places a dental implant on the patient’s gum and then screws a temporary dental crown onto it. A couple of months later, when healing is complete, the final crown is placed over the implant.
All the materials we mentioned earlier are also available for dental implants.
Dental Crowns Prices in Turkey
The cost of dental veneer varies depending on the material used and the size of the tooth. In general, ceramic crowns are more expensive than their metal counterparts as they offer all the advantages we have outlined.
If you need an implant, in addition to the price of the crown, you must consider other costs, such as the implant itself and the abutment, the pin to which the crown is attached.
How Long Do Dental Crowns Last in Turkey?
A dental crown can last between 5 and 20 years depending on factors such as:
Oral hygiene: if you brush your teeth well and undergo periodic oral hygiene, you will extend the life of the crown;
Feeding: eating too hard foods can wear out crowns, especially metal ones;
Gum withdrawal: with age or due to periodontal disease, the gingiva can be reabsorbed, and thus the crown may become unsuitable for the new anatomy.
