What is Eyelid Surgery?
Eyelid surgery is defined as the whole of surgical applications performed by plastic surgery specialists, which are applied to the lower and upper eyelids, aiming to remove sagging skin and excess muscle tissue and stretch the tissues around the eyes. This surgical procedure is performed in order to eliminate the aesthetic disorder in the eyelids.
Upper Eyelid Aesthetics
Upper eyelid aesthetics is a method of removing excess skin and excess fat that cause sagging in the upper eyelid under local anesthesia in 1-1.5 hours. Since the incision will be in the folds of the upper eyelid, the scar is not noticed in the following processes. A tape covering the stitch lines on the eyelids is placed after the operation. After the operation, the person is discharged and can easily continue her daily business the next day.
Lower Eyelid Aesthetics
Lower eyelid aesthetics: It is a method of removing the excess skin formed in the lower eyelid as a result of the sagging of the lower eyelid under local anesthesia in 1-1.5 hours. Since the incision is hidden under the eyelashes, it will become barely noticeable from the outside after the first weeks. But after 1 year, it will go unnoticed. As in the upper eyelid surgery, a tape covering the suture lines of the eyelids is placed and the person can continue her daily business the next day.
What Are The Reasons Requiring Eyelid Surgery?
Eyelid drooping can be congenital or can be caused by accidents such as paralysis, trauma or aging. Allergy-related diseases, constantly repeating eye infections, prolonged smoking and excessive exposure to sunlight make it difficult to see and at the same time cause an old and tired expression. Apart from these, eyelid surgery is also performed for aesthetic reasons.
What Should Be Considered Before The Surgery?
Aspirin and similar drugs should not be used for a week before the operation due to the risk of increasing bleeding tendency during the operation. Likewise, herbal teas such as green tea and vitamin E have a blood thinning effect. Therefore, it is beneficial not to consume them for a week before surgery. Likewise, smoking and other tobacco use should be stopped 2-3 weeks before, as it delays wound healing. Apart from these, conditions such as high eye pressure, hypertension, thyroid, dry eye are conditions that increase the risk in eyelid aesthetic surgeries. If you have one of these chronic conditions, you should inform your doctor about this.
Healing Process After Eyelid Aesthetics
Most patients complete the recovery process within 1.5 to 2 weeks. However, full recovery may take several months. As the swelling and bruises disappear after eyelid surgery, the shape of the eyelids emerges. As a result, the face gains a more vigorous and youthful appearance.
During the eyelid aesthetics, lubricating ointment and cold compresses can be applied, and in some cases, your eyes can be loosely covered with a gauze pad after the procedure is completed.
During the healing process, there may be some swelling, bruising, irritation, dry eyes that can be controlled with medication, cold compress and ointment first. Irritation is also possible at the incision area.
You should wear black sunglasses for sun protection while working until the healing process is fully completed.
Apart from these, keeping the head high with a few pillows while resting after the procedure helps to reduce edema. In the first days after the procedure, there may be complaints such as tension, stinging, burning around the eyes. These complaints can be resolved with simple painkillers. After aesthetics, heavy sports, applications that increase edema such as solarium, sauna, sun bath and steam bath should be avoided for 6 weeks.
